What exactly is Foot and Toenail Fungus?

Onychomycosis, or Toenail Fungus, is an infection underneath the top layer of the nail due to fungi. The nail regularly becomes darker in color and smells foul, when the fungus organisms take hold. As the fungus spreads it can make your feet very uncomfortable and extreme cases can make it hard to walk with out pain. Foot Fungus is more commonly referred to as Athlete’s Foot the medical term is called tinea pedis. This fungus grows on the surface of your feet, noticeable by red inflamed areas on the feet.


Toenail Fungus and Foot Fungus starts when your feet are put in a moist environments such as showers, swimming pools and locker rooms. The toenails and your feet are at risk to picking up fungus in these areas. If you have a cracked nail, area on the foot or injury makes you more susceptible to fungus.


Toenail fungus and Foot Fungus is frequently dismissed as a disease because it can be present for years. The disorder is defined by a progressive change in the quality and colour, which is generally unpleasant and uncomfortable. Foot fungus starts with painful itchy skin between the toes, bottom of the foot and sometimes as high as your ankles. Toenail fungus starts with your toenails cracking. This continues to get worse with itching around nail, nail crumbling and deformity of the toenail itself.


Both Toenail fungus and Foot fungus can be treated. Toenail fungus can be treated a variety of different ways such as oral medication, topical treatments as well as laser treatments. Foot fungus can be treated with oral medications and topical treatments.
